At Palantir, the values of interconnectedness, freedom, and openness shape and inform the projects that we work on. When we have the opportunity to collaborate with clients who share those values, the results can be pretty outstanding.

That’s why we were happy to have the opportunity to work with Acquia and Red Hat to build opensource.com, a new Drupal-based community Web site that aims to spread the word about how the open source way can bring people together to solve problems that impact the world around us.

As Drupal project lead and Acquia co-founder Dries Buytaert mentioned in his blog post earlier this week, the site is centered around discussions on how open source is having an impact in business, education, government, law, and life. While many people know open source as a software development method, the goal of the site is to take the dialogue far beyond just technology.

You can learn more about how opensource.com was built in our case study, and we hope that you’ll consider checking out the site and joining the conversation today!

As some of you may have already noticed, we re-launched our Web site right before Thanksgiving last week. This has been a long-overdue project for us; our existing site design dated back to 2005, and received its most recent major update in early March of 2008, when I took responsibility for porting it to Drupal 6, which had only been released only two weeks earlier.

At that point, very few of the major contributed modules, like Views and CCK, had been ported to Drupal 6, so my only choice at the time was to build the site almost entirely from core modules, like the built-in Blog module. Now, there’s nothing wrong with using those core modules for basic site-building, but as the site grew, and we wanted to do more with it, their limitations soon became apparent. Also, the fact that I had put the site together very quickly in a decidedly non-sustainable manner meant that it was very difficult to extend or add new functionality as time went by.

This time around, we decided to approach our own Web site like we would any other project at Palantir, employing our full iterative development process.

Find your seats and settle in for the premiere of the American Repertory Theater’s new Web site, built in Drupal 6 by Palantir. Housed at Harvard University, the A.R.T. is widely recognized as one of the best theater companies in the country. The site is one of the first prominent manifestations of a large-scale rebranding effort spearheaded by famed theater and opera director Diane Paulus, who recently took over as A.R.T.'s artistic director.

The site's design is based on concepts developed by Minelli, Inc. and wireframes developed by Palantir to incorporate all aspects of the site's information architecture and functionality. The result is a site that effectively conveys the new A.R.T. brand and is a true representation of everything they have to offer. We also seamlessly integrated an external ticketing system for the new site, making it that much easier to get to the show. Visit their site today and see what is generating all the buzz.

What’s the only thing better than launching one Web site?  Launching six!  Palantir is pleased to announce the launch of six sites for Washington University at St. Louis Arts & Sciences in Drupal 6.  This includes: the Department of Classics, Comparative Literature, East Asian Studies, Public Health, Religious Studies, and Russian Studies.  They feature four distinct themes designed by Paradowski Creative: Impact, Connect, Chronicle and Captivate.  This project, however, goes beyond the launch of the six aforementioned sites.  By utilizing Drupal’s multisite functionality along with the four themes, WUSTL A&S now has the infrastructure that will enable them to generate sites for all of their departments and programs, with consistent, yet customizable, layouts.  Thanks to this newfound freedom and flexibility, in all WUSTL A&S will have 21 sites launch between now and the beginning of the fall semester.  Look for an updated WUSTL Arts and Sciences case study coming soon.

We are super-psyched to announce that one Palantir-developed Drupal Web site been nominated for a Webby Award and another has been recognized as an Official Honoree! The Webby Award is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, and has been hailed by the New York Times as the "Internet's highest honor”.

The Herron School of Art and Design Web site has been nominated for Best School/University Web site. As one of only five nominees in its category, the site is eligible for two of the Internet industry's most sought-after awards: The Webby Award and The Webby People's Voice Award. The Herron Web site was developed by Palantir in collaboration with Chicago-based design partner Studio Blue. Built in Drupal 5, the site features a unique design that promotes the institution’s place, not just in its local community, but also the larger world.

Vote now!

While the 650-person International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences are responsible for selecting the winners of the Webby Award, the People’s Voice Award is selected by the global Web community, which includes you!

From now until April 30th, you can show your support for the Herron Web site by voting for it in the Webby People's Voice Award competition. The Herron site is all the way down at the bottom of the Website ballot, in the School/University category under Society.

The address is: http://pv.webbyawards.com

Winners of both the Webby and the Webby People’s Voice Awards will be announced on May 5th, 2009 and honored at a star-studded ceremony in New York City on June 8th hosted by Saturday Night Live‘s Seth Meyers.

But wait, there’s more!

Palantir is also proud to announce that the AIGA Chicago Web site was recognized as a Webby Official Honoree for its outstanding caliber of work and standard of excellence. The Drupal 5 Web site was built by Palantir in collaboration with the AIGA Chicago Board, including Steve Ryan (design) from VSA Partners and Mark Drozd (editorial) at SGDP as well as chapter director Alicia Maes.

As a distinction bestowed on fewer than 15% of the entries in the Webby Award competition, Palantir is privileged to have had several sites recognized by the Webby Awards over the past few years, and we plan to keep the trend going!

Palantir has just launched the new Web site for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts! Ponies for everyone! Just kidding - about the ponies, not Sam Fox.

Along with design partner Studio Blue, we have created a site that brings together Sam Fox's Graduate and Undergraduate Schools of Art and Architecture into one pleasing online experience. It was built in Drupal 6 and features snazzy new modules, such as Views Date Range, Flashy, and Views Cycle, all of which Palantir developed specifically for the project. They have now been flung out into the Drupal community for all to enjoy.

Come back soon to peep our case study, but in the meantime, you can view our Sam Fox presentation at DrupalCon DC here.
